HELSINKI, Jun 1 (PRIME) -- Finland continues imports of gas from Russia, but now it purchases liquefied natural gas (LNG), Finnish company Gasum’s Vice President for Communications and Sustainability Olga Vaisanen told PRIME on Wednesday.
Russian gas giant Gazprom stopped pumping pipeline gas to Finland on May 21 after the country decided not to pay for the gas in rubles.
“We have two different contracts for Russian gas supplies. One of them is on pipeline gas through Imatra, and the other is on liquefied natural gas transported by tankers. Supplies of pipeline gas has stopped. Purchases of liquefied natural gas does not fall under sanctions or the ruble conditions,” Vaisanen said.
The LNG contract is long-term, and Gasum will continue receiving it from Russia. Several batches of Russian LNG come to Finland per month, she said.
Finland also receives Russian gas from an interconnector pipeline with Estonia. The Latvian gas operator Conexus says that about 3 million cubic meters per day are pumped to Finland through the interconnector, around the same amount the country received directly from Russia earlier in May.
